The Son by Jo Nesbo - Book Review

THE SON by Jo Nesbo is about the life of a kid named Sonny Lofthus who has been in prison since his early twenty’s.  Sonny was a career scapegoat, confessing to various crimes in return for heroin. At a young age he had wished to grow up like his father, a decorated police officer until his father was found dead presumably from suicide. After his death it was found that Sonny’s father was a mole in the police for one of the city’s most ruthless criminals. While in jail, Sony finds out that his father never truly committed suicide but was in fact murdered. This encouraged him to break out of jail, kick his heroin addiction and exact revenge on those who killed his father and those who had commit crimes that he admitted to.
This book contains many mysteries that are not truly revealed until the end. The story causes conflicting emotions at times as to whether or not Sonny is a criminal or a vigilante. There are many characters in this book most with riveting and unforgettable personalities. With about 400 pages and average sized print the book doesn't take more than 4-5 days to read and is ultimately a good book.

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - Book Review

Thursday, June 12, 2014 0

Mockingjay is the third and last book in the Hunger Games series.  It is about the final trials of Katniss Everdeen.  I liked this book, but the beginning was very slow.  Any Hunger Games will like it.  The end does finalize the book despite the tedious start.  I suggest this book to anyone in high school.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio - Book Review

The book wonder is about a boy named Augie. Augie was born with a facial deformity which has not allowed him to go a normal school. During the book you will see Augie’s struggles and triumphs through the views of Augie and other people who were close to him.
One thing I liked about the book wonder was that it you could see the views and opinions of the events of the book through more than just one persons eyes. This book made me realize what true friendship is really about. Also I liked this book because it showed how Augie persevered through all the social and physical challenges of having his deformity. I would recommend wonder to anyone of any age who interested in reading a story of true friendship and perseverance.

Victor Cruz: Out of the Blue with Peter Schrager - Book Review

Tuesday, June 10, 2014 0
This autobiography is about the life of New York Giants football player Victor Cruz, who had an amazing rookie year with the New York Giants in 2011. This inspiring book tells about Victor's life, growing up in a tough neighborhood in New Jersey, coping with the death of a close friend when he was a teenager, and becoming part of the New York Giants football team after excelling in try outs. Unlike many star football players, Victor Cruz was an undrafted free agent signed by the New York Giants in the 2010 off season after earning a spot during try outs.
This is a very inspirational book, not just for athletes but for everyone looking to achieve a dream. I liked all the detail about the challenges he faced from growing up without a father to struggling to pass his SATs. As an avid tennis player, I appreciated how much he loved the sport of football, and even basketball. It's an uplifting book that I didn't want to stop reading. I think anyone who likes a sport and is looking to be inspired would enjoy this book. I also liked that it had pictures of him in it. It made the story easier to connect to while reading. I do, however, wish they spent more time talking about his first year with the Giants, but maybe that will be in his next book.

Legend by Marie Lu - Book Review

The book is set in a future society where America is divided in two parts, the colonies and the Republic.  The main characters, June and Day, live in the Republic.  June is a very smart girl who is in training to become a soldier and Day is a boy , who is rebelling against the Republic and its rules.  June’s bother, who is also a soldier, is killed and June believes Day is responsible.   When June finally tracks down Day, the real adventure begins.

I thought that the book was very good for both boys and girls.  If you like Divergent you will like this book as well. This book is a dystopian novel, meaning it is about  a world that is far from perfect.  . I liked how this book was action packed and fast paced. This book is easy to understand and a very quick read. I think this book is good because it kept me wanting to find out what happens next. I am not an avid reader but this held my attention and I have am now reading the second book in the trilogy.  I rate this book a 7 out of 10.
