Book Review: The Hunger Pains

Tuesday, April 3, 2012 0

The Hunger Pains by Harvard Lampoon

The Hunger Pains is an excellent laugh-out-loud comedy/parody. Harvard Lampoon takes the epic Hunger Games Trilogy and turns it into a ridiculous story of love, hate, and complete idiots. If you like comedies, this is the book for you. From dandruff problems to mutant puppies, this book has it all.

In the Hunger Pains, Kantkiss Neverclean (the parody-character of Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games) is living in a world where teens are forced to kill each other in a gigantic tournament known as the Hunger Games. She is completely ignorant of everything around her, and lives to hunt illegally. She mainly hunts helpless cows and their attendant farmers, calling them “worthy adversaries.” Point in case, we are looking here at a teenager with an IQ in the low teens. When she joins the Hunger Games, her whole family cheers her on to her death, she is booed by the crowds, and she middle-fingers the president.

Once in the tournament, it becomes apparent that for all her boasting, she is completely inept with a bow or any type of weapon. She has no idea that she’s hated by all the spectators; she thinks they’re cheering her on. She is so stupid that instead of falling in love with Gale, her childhood friend, she is falling for mentally inept, fat Peeta.

Tips:
I would recommend that you read the 1st of the Hunger Games before trying this book.
