COOL BOOK REVIEWS

Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

This is the fourth book of a series in which Eragon continues his journey to defeat the evil King Galbatorix. He is fighting with a rebel force called The Varden. This book describes his encounters on his journey to liberate the country of Alagaesia town by town, making his way to the formidable and powerful King.

This series was one of my favorite series of all time. I loved the first three books, and couldn’t wait for the fourth to come out. It is one of the best books I’ve ever read that can get you hooked. To the very last page, you want to read more. The only complaint I have, is the ending does not tie up all of the loose ends, and may be a disappointment to some. Nevertheless, this book is a definite must for those who have read the first three, and a great book to try for those who haven’t!

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

This is the third book of a trilogy in which Katniss is the face of the rebellion of 12 districts, and one newly re-discovered district, 13. She resembles the mockingjay, and is the motivation behind the rebels movement, despite her unstable mental state. This book depicts her struggle emotionally, physically, and mentally to overcome a variety of obstacles.

This is one of the only trilogies I was dying to get my hands on. I had heard great things about “The Hunger Games”, but after I had started reading the praise was justified. The Mockingjay was a spectacular ending to a phenomenal series, packed with action, confusion, evil, good, and everything in between. I recommend this book to anybody who doesn’t normally read, but would like to. Those who do read, this is but another gem for your collection!

Divergent By Veronica Roth

Divergent tells the story of 16 year old Beatrice in a futuristic society in the town of Chicago. She is at the stage in her life where she must take a test called an aptitude test in which her role in society will be determined. Her test results in her being a Divergent, which is considered extremely dangerous.

I think this book was great, and was full of interesting things. Almost any reader can find some joy in reading this book as it has everything you could hope for. If you liked The Hunger Games series, this book is definitely for you. It is a futuristic but realistic society in which a young girl is put through many hardships, and can have you as scared or relieved or nervous as she is. I recommend this especially to older teens and younger adults.

-- The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

The Red Pyramid is the start of Rick Riordan’s new series the Kane Chronicles. In this series, Carter and Sadie Cane, two twins, learn of a great family secret. They are all magicians, descendants of Ancient Egypt who communicate with the gods. Unfortunately, Carter’s Dad unleashed all the gods, including the Evil Set, in a desperate plan to try and bring back their dead mother. Now he is imprisoned by Set, and Carter and Sadie must save him by learning the way of magic. To make matters worse, Set has a evil plan to destroy the western civilization! I thought this book was very good. Unlike his Roman and Greek Demigod books where the kids are warriors, in this book they use magic. I like this series a lot, and am wondering if Riordan will make other series based on different gods. I hope so! I would recommend this book to anyone who like Riordan’s previous series.

The Throne of Fire
In the 2nd book of the Kane Chronicles, Carter and Sadie have started a school for “rogue” magicians who don’t want to follow Desjardins. Unfortunately Apophis is trying to break free and Ra is nowhere to be found. Carter and Sadie must go and get the three scrolls of Ra to free Ra, and to make matters worse, a powerful magician who has one of the scrolls is hunting them. On top of that, Carter desperately wants to find Zia. I really like this book. I thought it was cool that Carter and Sadie started their own school. I recommend this book to anyone who reads Rick Riordan or stories like it!

The Son Of Neptune, Rick Riordan
This book is the sequel to The Lost Hero and the 2nd book of Rick Riordan’s new series Heroes of Olympus. In this book, Percy has lost his memory and finds his way to Camp Jupiter, the Roman version of camp half-blood. There, he and his two new friends, Hazel and Frank, must complete a dangerous quest against the odds to prove themselves.  I thought this book was very good. Riordan portrayed the Roman Camp amazingly, and I liked how the story kept on comparing Roman things, deities, and people to Greek things, deities, and people. This action packed adventure showed true character in Percy, Hazel, and Frank. This was a 5 star amazing book.

The Death Cure by James Dashner
By Jay Oxman

This book is the final installment of the epic Maze Runner Trilogy. In this book, Thomas is finally going to put an end to WICKED’s evil plot. But who knows how it will turn out for the world?
I liked this book because of all the action and deception, but the plot was very hard to understand. Too many twists and turns. I would recommend this book to people who like stories about apocalyptic worlds and action. I would definitely put this on a 5 star level but the plot was a little too in depth, I was lost about halfway through.
In short I would recommend this book to everyone 6th grade or above.

Anthill by E. O. Wilson
By Jay Oxman

Anthill is about a boy (Raf) who loves to observe the ants at Nokobee Lake. But when the lake is sentenced for destruction, Raf fights for all the creatures at Nokobee.
What I liked about the book was that it was about the ant colonies; their wars, their rise, and their fall. I liked that because I am very interested in Myrmology, the study of ants. I also liked the book because I learned a lot about ants but it was in the form of a story.
My personal opinion is that this book deserved 5 stars, but if you are not interested in long detailed descriptions of ant colonies, I would look elsewhere. This book is partly about Raf and partly about the Ants upon Nokobee Shore. This book would appeal to people who would like to be biologists.  In short, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Nature.

The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan
By Jay Oxman

In this book, Carter and Sophie must stop Apophis from destroying the Earth. Can they before it is too late?
I loved this book and would give it 5 stars. The plot was good, and I loved the aspects of Egyptian Mythology. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure stories!
