In this dystopian world, society is broken up into five different factions -- Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. On a particular day of the year, all sixteen year olds must select a faction, which they will then spend the remainder of their life in. Beatrice Prior has to make a very important decision, which will drastically change the rest of her life...

After choosing her faction, Beatrice, who renames herself Tris, undergoes extreme physical tests alongside her fellow initiates. Along the way, Tris is faced with many struggles which include her hidden secret being discovered. This could mean saving the ones she loves, or death.
